Great Falls Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire at 1902 Cherry Drive during the early morning hours of May 31, according to a June 1 statement. The incident began at 4:18 a.m., when C-Platoon crews were dispatched following reports that a resident was still inside the home.
Upon arrival, Engine 4 crews found an active fire in the attached garage that had started to extend into the kitchen area. Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack and contained the blaze before it could spread further into the residence. Members of the Great Falls Police Department assisted by helping firefighters gain access through a secured door.
The occupant was able to evacuate without assistance and was later transported to Benefis Health System for treatment of smoke inhalation. A second alarm was issued for off-duty personnel to maintain emergency response coverage while crews addressed the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not believed to be criminal in nature. While significant damage occurred in the garage, damage inside was primarily limited to the kitchen area. Northwestern Energy disconnected power as a safety precaution.
