Great Falls Municipal Court Judge Steven Bolstad will retire on January 1, 2026, after serving 11 years on the bench. Judge Bolstad, a lifelong resident of Great Falls, was first appointed in 2014 following the retirement of Judge Nancy Luth. He was subsequently reaffirmed by voters in three elections and has presided as the sole judge for nine years.
Bolstad’s background includes teaching in Montana public schools, working as a firefighter for the United States Department of Agriculture, practicing Indian Law, and serving as a prosecutor for Cascade County. His legal career culminated with his appointment to the Municipal Court, where he became known for his advocacy to improve court operations and mental health initiatives.
One of Bolstad’s key achievements was helping amend the City Charter in 2022 to allow an additional elected Municipal Court judge. He also oversaw the relocation of the court from the basement to a more secure and efficient space on the second floor of the Civic Center.
During his tenure, Bolstad established a Mental Health Court that operated until funding issues led to its suspension. He contributed to judicial training efforts through roles with the Montana Magistrates Association and served as Vice Chair on the Commission on Courts of Limited Jurisdiction, appointed by the Montana Supreme Court.
Reflecting on his service, Judge Bolstad stated: “It has been a privilege and my honor to serve the people and the City of Great Falls. It was always a life goal to pay back the education provided me and the many opportunities from being born and educated in Great Falls.”
Mayor Cory Reeves commented: “The City of Great Falls and Cascade County have been fortunate to have Judge Bolstad serve our community as a prosecutor, and later, as a judge. His work on the bench brought real, lasting change to City Court, and we will certainly miss his steady leadership. Judge Bolstad’s dedication and service to our community have been remarkable.”
After Bolstad’s retirement, an interim judge will be appointed by the City Commission until December 31, 2027. The next municipal general election in 2027 will allow candidates to run for this position. The city plans to provide further updates regarding this process.
The City expressed gratitude for Judge Bolstad’s service and wished him well in retirement.
