The Great Falls-Cascade County Historic Preservation Advisory Commission has released its 2025 commemorative Christmas ornament, featuring the Arvon Block. The ornaments are designed by local artist Sheree Nelson and are available for $20 at several locations, including the Planning and Community Development Department in the Civic Center, Great Falls Public Library, The History Museum, Cassiopeia Books, Dragonfly Dry Goods, and Mountain Colors Hand Painted Yarn. Proceeds from sales will go toward preserving historic sites in Great Falls and Cascade County.
The Arvon Block was constructed in 1890 by Robert Vaughn, who was the first person to register a ranch in Choteau County. At that time, the Sun River Valley was part of Choteau County before Cascade County existed. After his wife passed away, Vaughn left ranching and moved to Great Falls. He built the Arvon Block, which included Axtell Stables on one side and a hotel on the other. Vaughn named the building after his daughter Arvonia. By the early 2000s, the structure had deteriorated but underwent rehabilitation in 2013 and now stands as a landmark on the south side of Downtown Great Falls.
This year’s ornament is the 18th in a series that highlights historic locations throughout Great Falls and Cascade County. Previous editions have featured sites such as the 10th Street Bridge, Fort Shaw, and the Belt Theater. Past ornaments remain available for purchase through the Planning and Community Development Department.
