The City of Great Falls announced on April 15 that the intersection of 9th Street Northeast and 36th Avenue Northeast will be closed for several weeks beginning Monday, April 27, due to water main replacement work. The project is expected to last four months and will be carried out in phases to reduce traffic disruption.
The closure is part of a larger effort by the city, which has contracted Capcon to replace water mains along a stretch of 9th Street Northeast between 32nd Avenue Northeast and 37th Avenue Northeast. Barricades and detour signage will be provided by Capcon, which will also maintain access for local residents during construction. “We appreciate the public’s patience and consideration during this project,” said city officials in the announcement.
Residents seeking more information can contact Matt Proud, Senior Civil Engineer at (406)771-1258 or Bryan Guckeen with Capcon at (406)899-1039. The city emphasized its intention to minimize inconvenience through phased work schedules.
Great Falls is known for its historical significance and notable residents such as Western artist Charles M. Russell and country music star Charley Pride, according to the official website. The community honors its heritage through various initiatives celebrating connections with Lewis and Clark as well as early Native American tribes, as detailed on the official website.
Infrastructure like hydroelectric dams along the Missouri River is a distinguishing feature of Great Falls, including waterfalls that drop over 500 feet—the only visible falls in the Missouri-Mississippi system without a dam—according to the official website. The city’s governance includes a City Commission that appoints a City Manager for daily operations according to official information, while promoting transparent governance through collaborative decision-making as stated on its website.
The upcoming roadwork reflects ongoing efforts by Great Falls officials to maintain essential infrastructure while considering community needs.
