A section of the River’s Edge Trail in Great Falls, Montana, will be temporarily closed for maintenance on January 8 and 9, 2026. The closure will take place from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm each day and affects the area between the Caboose Trailhead and Giant Springs Road.
Kevin Vining, Park Manager for the City of Great Falls, announced the closure and encouraged public understanding during this period. “The public’s understanding is appreciated as Park & Recreation works to improve the trail,” Vining stated.
The River’s Edge Trail is a popular route along the Missouri River, which is notable for its series of waterfalls. These falls are a distinctive feature of Great Falls and are part of what led to the city’s founding in 1884 by Paris Gibson, who recognized the strategic value of its location near these natural resources (https://greatfallsmt.net/community/history).
Great Falls has developed as a municipal government serving residents through a commission-manager structure since adopting its charter in 1986 (https://greatfallsmt.net/citycommission/form-government). The city also emphasizes transparent governance and community engagement in decision-making processes (https://greatfallsmt.net/citycommission/city-commission-visiongoals).
The area around Great Falls includes significant infrastructure such as hydroelectric dams on the Missouri River and has been influenced by its proximity to three rivers: the Missouri, Sun, and Roe (https://greatfallsmt.net/community/fun-facts). The city continues to maintain recreational spaces like River’s Edge Trail as part of ongoing efforts to serve both residents and visitors.
