Summer is here and it is important to remember some key safety tips in this season when more people tend to be outdoors for longer periods of time.

First, the sun! The sun is great – warm, life-giving, a source of light – and the sun is out longer in the summer months. 

Of course, the UV rays of the sun carry significant risks – sunburn is a pain, to be sure. But longer-term exposure to the sun can also put you at risk for significant skin damage and even skin cancer. 

The best way to enjoy the sun while protecting your skin is to be sure to use sunscreen. A good sunscreen should have an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 30 or greater and should be reapplied every two hours. 

It’s also important to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Of course, when possible, you should avoid repeated, prolonged exposure. Yes, enjoy the sun – but do so carefully. 

Another summer reality – less fun than the sun – is ticks. Being outside more means more exposure to those pesky arachnids that get under our skin. For the most part, ticks are merely an annoyance. You should, however, check for ticks regularly and remove them from your body quickly. 

It’s also possible to be exposed to a tick-borne illness like Lyme disease. If you notice unusual redness, itching, or a fever after exposure to ticks, see your healthcare provider right away. While treatable, these diseases can be very dangerous if you fail to act. 

Finally, it is critical to be safe when in and around water. Drowning is a serious risk and water may often be deeper or a current stronger than it appears. Avoid being alone in areas of deep water. Use a life vest when boating. Take caution when diving – being sure to assess the depth you are diving into and any possible hazards. 

Summer fun is more fun if you respect the sun, watch out for ticks and other pests, and use caution in and around water.
