A new youth basketball league called Little Hoopers is set to begin at the Scheels Aim High Aquatic & Recreation Center in Great Falls, Montana. The program is designed for children in kindergarten through second grade and aims to introduce young players to basketball with a focus on skill development, teamwork, and enjoyment rather than competition.

According to organizers, the league will have two coed divisions: Mites for kindergarten and first-grade students, and Rookies for second graders. Each division is limited to 32 participants. The season includes five practices and five games. Practices are scheduled weekly, typically on Thursday evenings, while games will take place starting in March on Saturday mornings or Tuesday evenings.

The format features 4-on-4 play using lowered hoops and age-appropriate basketballs. All players receive equal playing time, no official scores are kept during games, and coaches are present on the court to guide players through drills and gameplay fundamentals. Every participant will receive a league T-shirt.

To ensure safety, all volunteer coaches must complete background checks. Teams are formed by balanced random assignments without tryouts required. The registration fee is $110 per player for the season; scholarships are available upon request.

“Little Hoopers emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and enjoyment over competition,” said Jerry Jordan, Recreation/Sports Coordinator for the City of Great Falls Parks & Recreation Department. “Every child receives equal playing time, no official scores are kept, and coaches and facilitators are on the court to guide play and teach fundamentals.”

Registration can be completed in person at the Scheels Aim High Aquatic & Recreation Center at 900 29th St S or by calling 406-727-6099. The deadline to register is February 22 or until each division reaches capacity.
