State Rep. Wendy McKamey (R-Great Falls) praised the Montana Department of Justice for the dip in violent crime statewide.

Data released by the Montana Department of Corrections shows that violent crime in 2018 decreased 1 percent though it increased 33 percent in the past five years.

Figures also show decreases in rape, down 13 percent, and robberies, down by 6 percent.

“Thank you Tim Fox for your leadership as attorney general for keeping Montanans safe!” McKamey tweeted on Dec. 1.

The DOC also reported that total index property crimes fell 3 percent in 2018. Burglaries went down more than 10 percent while motor vehicle thefts dipped 2 percent.

Drug crime reports decreased by 3 percent in 2018, with marijuana offenses falling 4 percent. A negative statistic is a 100 percent rise in methamphetamine reports since 2014.

Total DUI citations last year declined 6 percent in 2018.

Sheriff and police data reported separate from the Highway Patrol prior to 2017, according to the DOC.
