U.S. Senator Steve Daines has joined several colleagues in sending a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) condemning what they describe as a disrespectful depiction of the Last Supper during the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The letter also calls on the IOC to make formal changes to the Olympic Charter to prevent any religion from being mocked in future opening or closing ceremonies.
"We write in response to the vulgar mockery of the Christian faith on display at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The Games should unite people of every country, race, and creed. There is no place for anti-Christian bigotry at an event designed to bring the world together. The Games should celebrate the athletes, not denigrate anyone’s faith. We urge you to take immediate action by amending Rule 55 of the Olympic Charter to ensure that no faiths are the subject of mockery as part of the opening or closing ceremonies ever again," stated Senator Daines and his colleagues in their letter.
Senator Daines was joined by Senators James Lankford (R-Okla.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kan.), Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Dan Sullivan (R-Ark.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.) in sending this letter.
