U.S. Senator Steve Daines has introduced the "Modern Firearms Safety Act," a bill aimed at prohibiting states from enforcing handgun rosters deemed unconstitutional. These rosters often require firearms to include features such as microstamping, loaded chamber indicators, and magazine disconnect mechanisms, which are considered costly and unnecessary by critics. According to Daines, these requirements make it challenging for manufacturers to sell new handguns.
"Our Founding Fathers were clear—the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Forcing Americans to outfit their firearms with onerous and costly features is a clear attempt to undermine the Second Amendment and law-abiding citizens’ constitutional rights, and it must stop," said Daines in a statement.
The bill has garnered support from organizations including the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, National Shooting Sports Foundation, and National Rifle Association. In addition to Daines, several other senators have backed the legislation: Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Roger Marshall (R-Kansas), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.).
