U.S. Senator Steve Daines, along with Majority Leader John Thune and 44 other Senate colleagues, has reintroduced the "Death Tax Repeal Act." This legislation aims to permanently abolish the federal estate tax, which Daines describes as a "punitive tax" impacting Montana's farms, ranches, and businesses.
"When Montanans lose a loved one, the last thing they need to worry about is what will happen to their family farm or ranch," said Daines. "I’m glad to join this effort to protect Montanans from this unfair and unnecessary tax."
The bill garners support from over 190 members of the Family Business Coalition and more than 105 members of the Family Business Estate Tax Coalition. This includes organizations such as the National Federation of Independent Business, the National Restaurant Association, the National Association of Home Builders, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
In December 2017, Daines supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which returned over $700 million to Montana families. It also doubled the estate tax exemption to $10 million for individuals and $20 million for families. Currently, Daines seeks to make these provisions permanent and recently communicated his opposition to any short-term tax bills in a letter addressed to President Trump.
