U.S. Senator Steve Daines has secured foreign policy commitments from Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio during a confirmation hearing. The discussions focused on combating Iran's illegal oil sales, strengthening U.S. relationships in Central Asia, and addressing Mexican drug cartels.

During the hearing, Daines emphasized the significance of Rubio's role: "You are charged with one of the most important tasks the administration will have, and that’s advancing President Trump’s agenda and representing the interests of the United States around the world." He highlighted various global conflicts and issues, including those involving Ukraine, Israel, Sudan, Iran's nuclear programs, Venezuela's tyranny, Russia's disregard for treaties, and strategies related to China.

Daines questioned Rubio on his approach to dealing with Iran's illegal oil sales: "As you know, Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terror... These oil sales are directly resulting in global unrest and they’re costing innocent lives." Rubio responded by emphasizing a cautious approach towards any arrangements with Iran: "What cannot be allowed under any circumstances is a nuclear armed Iran."

The conversation also touched upon strengthening ties in Central Asia. Daines shared his recent visits to Turkmenistan and Tajikistan: "I discussed that with you a bit- to Turkmenistan and Tajikistan... I was bedded down 20 miles from the Iranian border in Ashkaba." He sought Rubio's commitment to work on removing certain designations affecting trade relations with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Rubio agreed to collaborate on this matter: "...we will work with you on this ’cause I think it’s important."

Finally, Daines addressed concerns about Mexican drug cartels crossing into U.S. territory: "...we talk about all these conflicts around the world; sometimes we forget some of the most important relationships are right in our backyard thinking about Mexico." In response, Rubio underscored the threat posed by these criminal groups: "...they pose a threat to the United States most certainly flooding us with fentanyl..."

The discussion concluded with an acknowledgment of mutual interests between Mexico and the United States in addressing cartel violence.
