U.S. Senator Steve Daines engaged in discussions with President Trump's ambassadorial nominees for the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Italy on enhancing global trade relations, bolstering energy security in collaboration with allies, and strengthening defense cooperation.
During a conversation with Tom Barrack, nominee for Ambassador to Turkey, Daines addressed advancing U.S.-Turkey trade relations. "One of the primary responsibilities of an ambassador is working to develop a positive trade and economic relationship between the United States and their assigned post. If confirmed, how do you plan to work with Turkey to advance U.S. trade relations?" he inquired. Barrack responded by acknowledging Turkey's historical significance in trade and expressing optimism about reaching a targeted $100 billion in annual bilateral trade.
The dialogue continued with Tilman Fertitta, nominated for Ambassador to Italy, focusing on energy security. Daines highlighted the potential for U.S.-Italy energy collaborations, remarking on Italian Prime Minister Meloni's stance on balancing relations between the U.S. and Europe. "How could Italy partner with the United States to ensure energy security?" Daines asked. Fertitta advocated for Italy increasing energy transactions with American firms over other countries, aiming to narrow the trade gap.
Lastly, Daines conferred with Warren Stephens, nominee for Ambassador to the U.K., emphasizing the U.K.'s long-standing defense alliance with the U.S. and inquiring about military sales commitments. Stephens stated, "I would urge the United States to fulfill every commitment it has to provide the UK with the weapons and the systems that it needs."
