U.S. Senators Steve Daines and Tim Sheehy, along with Congressmen Ryan Zinke and Troy Downing, have introduced several bills aimed at bolstering Montana's tribal communities. The legislation seeks to improve access to clean water, enhance infrastructure, and maintain operations at the Bull Mountains Mine.
Senator Daines emphasized the importance of these measures: "From clean water and reliable infrastructure to critical tax revenue, I’m glad to work with Senator Sheehy, Congressman Zinke and Congressman Downing to support Montana’s tribal communities across our great state."
Senator Sheehy highlighted the practical benefits of the bills: "Working to meet the needs of communities on our reservations and across the Hi-Line by investing in critical infrastructure, ensuring access to clean water, and providing reliable revenue is common sense."
Congressman Zinke focused on tribal sovereignty: "Tribal sovereignty needs to mean something; these bills will force the federal government to live up to their treaty obligations and make real investments in the future of the Nations."
Congressman Downing expressed his commitment: "I am proud to be a part of a delegation that works together to support Montana’s tribal communities."
The proposed Northern Montana Water Security Act aims to finalize Indian Rights Water Settlements in Montana. It includes $1.3 billion for infrastructure improvements for tribal water users and $300 million for projects like restoring the Milk River Project.
The Crow Revenue Act proposes resolving land holdings issues on the Crow Reservation by transferring specific tracts between private parties and federal interests. This act also involves a revenue-sharing agreement for developments in Bull Mountains Tracts.
The Crow Tribe Water Settlement Amendment Act seeks updates from a project-based settlement approach to a fund-based one. It extends authorization for hydropower development until 2030.
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte supports these legislative efforts: “The measures introduced today by Montana’s congressional delegation will benefit our entire state.”
President Jeffery Stiffarm of Fort Belknap Indian Community expressed gratitude for ongoing support: “Our bill will also settle water rights litigation and avoid decades of uncertainty over water supplies.”
Blackfeet Tribal Chairman Rodney Gervais called for swift passage of legislation: “This bill provides a much-needed water treatment facility for our people.”
Chairman White Clay of Crow Tribe sees this as a turning point: “These legislative victories are not just policies; they are promises to our community – promises that we will continue to thrive, prosper, and preserve our heritage for future generations.”
