U.S. Senators Steve Daines, Gary Peters, Tim Sheehy, and Elissa Slotkin have introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at banning the import of critical minerals from Russia. The proposed legislation targets minerals such as platinum, palladium, and copper.
Senator Daines stated, "There is no reason the United States should run to Russia for critical minerals that can be found right here at home, including in Montana." He emphasized the need to prioritize American mining jobs and industries.
Senator Peters highlighted the national security implications of the issue: "We cannot allow Russia to dominate the global market for critical minerals. This is not just an economic issue but an issue of national security as well."
Senator Sheehy criticized past administrations for relying on foreign sources: "Reducing our dependence on other countries for critical minerals is the epitome of America First common sense." He expressed support for President Trump's administration in addressing this matter.
Senator Slotkin echoed similar sentiments regarding domestic supply chains: "No one thinks relying on Putin for our critical minerals is a good idea."
The bill's background indicates it was initially introduced by Daines in response to layoffs at Sibayne-Stillwater Mine during the Biden-Harris administration. It aims to prohibit mineral imports until hostilities between Russia and Ukraine cease.
Rich Nolan from the National Mining Association expressed support for the senators' efforts, stating that building secure mineral supply chains is crucial for economic and national security.
