The city of Helena closed playgrounds until further notice in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. Notices went up March 27 in playgrounds throughout Helena advising people not to use the areas, including play structures, slides, swings, and other playground equipment.

Additional information can be found on the city website, including a full list of city services impacted by COVID-19 along with reopening dates as available. The website specifies that while playgrounds are closed, and which city parks are still open.

In late March, Gov. Steve Bullock issued a "stay at home" executive order with an exemption for parks and recreation noted in the order. While the exemption allowed city parks to stay open, social distancing should still be observed and park facilities must only be used when absolutely necessary.

As emphasized by Helena Parks and Recreation director Kristi Ponozzo: "People can still be in parks, not in groups, and must be six feet apart. We are asking that people only use bathroom and garbage facilities if absolutely necessary to help protect the public and our employees. We will be evaluating regularly our ability to keep some of our restroom facilities open."

It's unknown how long Helena playgrounds will be closed for or if further restrictions will be implemented in the near future.
