Senate passes resolution recognizing National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week

U.S. Senators Steve Daines and Martin Heinrich have announced the successful passage of their bipartisan resolution in the U.S. Senate, designating the week starting February 3, 2025, as "National Tribal Colleges and Universities Week." This initiative aims to recognize and support students pursuing higher education at Tribal Colleges and Universities.

Senator Daines emphasized the importance of these institutions in Montana's communities, stating, "Our tribal colleges and universities play a vital role in Montana’s communities and provide incredible opportunities for higher education on or near Montana’s reservations." He expressed pride in introducing legislation that acknowledges the achievements of students, teachers, and educational institutions in Montana on a national level.

Senator Heinrich highlighted the significance of this resolution by saying, "This resolution recognizes the vital role of Tribal colleges and universities in creating opportunities for the next generation of Tribal leaders, upholding Tribal educational sovereignty, and preparing Native students for careers they can build their families around in their home communities."

The resolution was supported by a diverse group of senators including John Barrasso, Michael Bennett, Kevin Cramer, Dick Durbin, Deb Fischer, Ruben Gallego, Mazie Hirono, John Hoeven, Ron Johnson, Mark Kelly, Amy Klobuchar, James Lankford, Jerry Moran, Mike Rounds, Jacky Rosen, Bernie Sanders, Brian Schatz, Tim Sheehy, Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin.
