U.S. Senator Steve Daines has secured commitments from Jamieson Greer, President Trump's nominee for the United States Trade Representative (USTR), to support Montana's agricultural sector by expanding market access and ensuring fair competition. During a discussion with Greer, Daines emphasized the importance of opening new markets for farmers, ranchers, small businesses, and manufacturers in Montana.
Daines acknowledged the impact of previous tariff policies on his constituents, noting that "agriculture is our number one economic driver in Montana." He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers due to increased costs resulting from tariffs on steel and aluminum. Daines stressed the need for swift action to secure new market access amidst ongoing negotiations with Canada and Mexico.
Greer expressed his commitment to taking action: "...I am going to do my best to keep up with him so I can open up the markets...we’re giving Montana cattle ranchers and other farmers and growers opportunities in a lot of markets."
The conversation also touched upon China's role in global trade. Daines noted that 95% of consumers live outside the U.S., presenting significant opportunities for Montana's agricultural sector. He criticized what he called an unambitious trade agenda pursued by the Biden administration, which he claimed allowed other countries to advance their trade agreements.
Greer responded by emphasizing the importance of enforcing compliance with existing trade agreements: "There are mechanisms within that agreement...to address failures of compliance." He assured that if confirmed, he would focus on ensuring China honors its commitments under the phase one trade deal.
Daines concluded by expressing optimism about working with Greer and others to improve market access for U.S. producers: "If confirmed, Mr. Greer, I think we will have a very good team in working with you."
